Overview

Hoedspruit is a small town set in the Lowveld of Limpopo, ringed by mountains and bordered by some of the finest private game reserves in South Africa. For most safari travellers it is best known as a name on a boarding pass — the air gateway to the western flank of the Greater Kruger — but it is also a destination in its own right, with conservation centres, the Blyde River Canyon, and the Panorama Route all within easy reach.

Its position is what makes it so useful. Hoedspruit sits within striking distance of the Timbavati, Thornybush, Klaserie and Balule reserves, as well as the central and northern lodges of the Kruger itself. Arrive by air and you are often in your safari vehicle within minutes.

Hoedspruit is the natural arrival point for a long list of Greater Kruger reserves and lodges:

Hoedspruit is unusual among bush gateways in having genuine attractions of its own. The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre is a leading conservation and breeding facility focused on cheetah and other threatened species. A short drive away, the Blyde River Canyon — one of the largest green canyons on Earth — and the wider Panorama Route offer dramatic scenery, waterfalls, and viewpoints such as God's Window and the Three Rondavels. Getting There by Air

Hoedspruit is served by Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (FAHS / HDS), a short distance from the town and the surrounding reserves. By private charter from Johannesburg — departing OR Tambo, Lanseria, or Grand Central — the flight takes approximately one hour. That compares with a road journey of five to six hours via the N4 and the escarpment passes.

The drive from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit is long, and the final stretch over the escarpment is slow.
