Madikwe Game Reserve — malaria-free Big 5 safari on the Botswana border

Overview

Madikwe Game Reserve is South Africa's fifth-largest game reserve, encompassing 75,000 hectares of bushveld, grassland, and rocky outcrops in the North West Province. Situated on the Botswana border along the Great Marico River, Madikwe occupies a transitional zone between the Kalahari sandveld to the west and the bushveld to the east, creating an unusually diverse habitat that supports an exceptional range of wildlife.

The reserve was established in 1991 as a joint conservation and community initiative — one of the most ambitious game reintroduction programmes ever undertaken in Africa. Operation Phoenix, as it was known, relocated over 8,000 animals of 28 species into the newly fenced reserve over a period of six years. Today, Madikwe supports thriving populations of all the Big 5 along with a remarkable array of predators and rare species.

What makes Madikwe uniquely compelling — and the reason it has become one of South Africa's fastest-growing safari destinations — is that it is entirely malaria-free. Located at an altitude of approximately 1,000 metres above sea level and well south of the malaria line, Madikwe offers a genuine Big 5 safari experience without the need for antimalarial medication. For families with young children, pregnant travellers, and anyone who prefers to avoid prophylactics, this is a significant advantage over Kruger and the lowveld reserves.

Wildlife & Activities

Madikwe's wildlife roster is outstanding. All of the Big 5 are present: lion, leopard, elephant, both black and white rhinoceros, and buffalo. The reserve is home to an estimated 300 elephants, several lion prides, and a growing leopard population that benefits from the rocky terrain and dense riverine bush along the Marico.

The reserve's standout species, however, are its endangered African wild dogs. Madikwe supports one of South Africa's most stable and viewable populations of this critically endangered predator, with multiple packs that are regularly tracked and observed by guides. Wild dog sightings here are more reliable than in almost any other reserve in Southern Africa, and watching a pack hunt across the open grasslands is one of the great wildlife spectacles of the continent.

Cheetah are another highlight. The open grassland sections of the reserve provide ideal cheetah habitat, and sightings of mothers with cubs are not uncommon. Brown hyena, a shy and rarely seen carnivore, is also present in Madikwe — one of the few reserves where this elusive species is regularly encountered.

Birding is excellent, with over 350 species recorded. The varied habitats support a mix of Kalahari and bushveld species, including crimson-breasted shrike, violet-eared waxbill, Marico sunbird, and several raptor species. The Marico River system attracts water-associated species including African fish eagle and giant kingfisher.

Activities include morning and afternoon game drives in open safari vehicles, guided bush walks, and night drives with spotlights. Several lodges offer specialist activities including hide sessions at waterholes, star-gazing evenings (the low light pollution produces exceptional night skies), and community visits to neighbouring villages as part of Madikwe's commitment to community-based conservation.

Lodges & Accommodation

Madikwe hosts a carefully curated collection of safari lodges, each allocated a concession area within the reserve. The strict limit on the number of lodges ensures low vehicle density on game drives — it is common to spend an entire morning drive without encountering another vehicle.

Madikwe Safari Lodge offers three distinct camps — Lelapa, Kopano, and Dithaba — each with a different character. Dithaba is perched on a hillside with sweeping views over the bush, while Lelapa is designed specifically for families with children, complete with a dedicated children's programme and interconnecting rooms.

Jaci's Lodges comprise two properties: Jaci's Safari Lodge and Jaci's Tree Lodge. The tree lodge suites are built on elevated wooden platforms among the trees, offering a unique elevated perspective on the bush. Both properties are owner-managed and known for their warm hospitality and excellent guiding.

Morukuru Family operates three exclusive-use properties: Owner's House, River House, and Farm House. These private villas come with dedicated staff, vehicle, and guide, making them ideal for families and small groups who want total privacy and flexibility in their safari schedule.

Impodimo Game Lodge occupies a dramatic setting among sandstone cliffs, with each suite built into the rock face. The lodge is particularly noted for its proximity to a resident leopard territory and a wild dog denning site.

Other notable properties include Molori Safari Lodge (ultra-luxury with private plunge pools and spa), Tau Game Lodge (excellent value with strong Big 5 sightings), Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge (community-owned, offering authentic cultural experiences), and Jamala Madikwe (a stylish contemporary lodge with a strong focus on sustainability).

Rates across Madikwe lodges range from approximately R5,000 to R30,000 per person per night on a fully inclusive basis. The reserve offers excellent value compared to the Sabi Sands lodges while delivering comparable wildlife encounters.

Getting There by Air

Madikwe Game Reserve has its own airfield, Madikwe Airfield, located within the reserve boundaries. The strip is well-maintained and capable of handling light charter aircraft, making direct air access straightforward.

  • Madikwe Airfield — The reserve's primary airstrip, centrally located within Madikwe. Most lodges are within a 15 to 30 minute drive from the strip. Flight time from Johannesburg (OR Tambo, Lanseria, or Grand Central) is approximately 45 minutes.

The alternative is driving, which takes 3.5 to 4 hours from Johannesburg via the N4 towards Rustenburg and then north through Groot Marico and Gaborone Road. The final section of the drive passes through small towns and rural areas on increasingly narrow roads. While shorter than the Kruger drive, it is still a significant time commitment — especially for international guests or families with young children.

Our aircraft fleet includes aircraft ideally suited to the Madikwe strip. A typical charter carries 4 to 8 passengers with luggage, departing at your preferred time from any Johannesburg-area airport. We coordinate arrival times with your lodge to ensure a seamless transfer from airstrip to safari vehicle. Request a quote for your Madikwe charter.

Why Fly Private to Madikwe

Although Madikwe is closer to Johannesburg than Kruger, the drive still takes 3.5 to 4 hours each way. That is 7 to 8 hours of driving for a typical weekend safari — time that could be spent on game drives instead. A 45-minute charter flight cuts the travel time by more than 80%, giving you substantially more time in the bush.

For families with young children — Madikwe's core market — the case for flying is even stronger. Small children do not tolerate long car journeys well, and the combination of a malaria-free reserve with a short flight creates the most family-friendly Big 5 safari experience in South Africa. You can leave Johannesburg after breakfast and be on your first game drive before lunch.

Weekend safaris are where charter flights deliver the most value at Madikwe. A Friday afternoon departure from Lanseria or Grand Central puts you at the lodge by sunset for a night drive. Two full days of game drives on Saturday and Sunday, and a late-morning flight home on Sunday afternoon means you experience three game drives more than a driving visitor on the same weekend schedule.

Charter flights also eliminate the fatigue and road risk associated with driving. The route to Madikwe passes through areas with livestock on the road, slow-moving vehicles, and limited cell reception. After a full weekend of early-morning game drives, the last thing anyone wants is a 4-hour drive home. A 45-minute flight back to Johannesburg is a far safer and more pleasant end to the trip.

For groups combining Madikwe with other destinations, flying opens up itineraries that are impractical by road. A Madikwe and Kruger combination, for example, involves an 8-hour drive between the two reserves — but only a 1.5-hour flight. Add Sabi Sands or a Waterberg stop, and the multi-destination safari becomes effortless.
