Timbavati Private Nature Reserve
Home of the legendary white lions. 53,000 hectares of unfenced wilderness adjoining Kruger National Park.

Overview
Timbavati Private Nature Reserve is one of the great wilderness areas of Southern Africa — 53,000 hectares of pristine Lowveld bush stretching west from an unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park. This open border is fundamental to Timbavati's character: wildlife moves freely between the two reserves, creating a contiguous ecosystem of over 2.4 million hectares that supports vast seasonal migrations and some of the highest predator densities on the continent.
The name Timbavati derives from the Tsonga phrase meaning "the place where something sacred came down to earth from the heavens" — a reference to the extraordinary white lions that were first documented here in 1975. These leucistic lions, carrying a rare recessive gene that produces their distinctive pale colouring, remain Timbavati's most famous residents and are found nowhere else in the wild. Seeing a white lion in its natural habitat remains one of African safari's most coveted experiences.
The reserve was established in 1956 when a group of private landowners pooled their properties and removed internal fences to create a unified conservation area. In 1993, the fences between Timbavati and the Kruger National Park were dropped entirely, a landmark conservation decision that restored ancient animal migration routes and dramatically increased the viable habitat for wide-ranging species like elephant, wild dog, and lion.
Wildlife & Activities
Timbavati is Big 5 country in the fullest sense. Lion prides patrol the open grasslands and dry riverbeds, leopards are regularly tracked in the denser bush along seasonal watercourses, and elephant herds numbering in the hundreds move through the reserve, particularly during the dry season between May and October. Both black and white rhinoceros are present, though sightings are carefully managed to protect these critically endangered animals from poaching.
African wild dogs are one of Timbavati's headline species. The reserve lies within the core range of several packs that den and hunt across the Greater Kruger system. These endangered predators are notoriously difficult to find in most reserves, but Timbavati's experienced trackers — many of whom have grown up in the surrounding communities — have an exceptional success rate. Cheetah sightings are also common on the open plains, and spotted hyena clans are active and vocal, especially around kills.
Timbavati pioneered walking safaris in the Greater Kruger region, and they remain a cornerstone of the experience here. Multi-day walking trails led by armed and qualified trails guides take small groups deep into the bush, sleeping in fly camps or rustic trail shelters. These walks are not gentle strolls — they are immersive encounters with wild Africa on foot, where reading tracks, understanding wind direction, and maintaining silence are essential. For those who have done vehicle-based safaris before, a walking trail in Timbavati offers something profoundly different.
Game drives follow the standard Greater Kruger format: early morning departures before dawn, returning for brunch, then afternoon drives that extend into the night with spotlights. Off-road driving is permitted in Timbavati, allowing trackers to follow animal movements into the bush rather than being confined to established roads. Night drives reveal nocturnal specialists including African wild cat, serval, aardvark, bush baby, and porcupine.
Birding in Timbavati is exceptional, with over 360 species recorded. The reserve's varied habitats — from open savannah to riverine forest to rocky outcrops — support everything from large raptors like martial eagle and Verreaux's eagle-owl to colourful species such as lilac-breasted roller, southern carmine bee-eater, and the elusive Narina trogon.
Lodges & Accommodation
Timbavati's lodges range from ultra-exclusive luxury properties to authentic bush camps that maintain a deliberately unfussy approach. The common thread is exclusivity: with strict limits on the number of beds across the reserve, game-drive densities remain among the lowest in the Greater Kruger.
Kings Camp is one of Timbavati's most established properties, offering spacious thatched suites, a rim-flow pool overlooking the bush, and a well-stocked wine cellar. It is a polished operation that consistently delivers excellent guiding and cuisine. Motswari Private Game Reserve has operated since 1977 and has earned a reputation for outstanding game viewing combined with warm, unpretentious hospitality — a favourite among repeat visitors who value substance over showmanship.
Tanda Tula Safari Camp is a classic tented camp in the most traditional sense: canvas-sided tents with en-suite bathrooms set beneath ancient jackalberry trees along a seasonal riverbed. It is as close to the original safari experience as the Greater Kruger offers. Their sister property, Tanda Tula Field Camp, takes this even further with a walking-focused experience and semi-permanent camps that move with the seasons.
Kambaku Safari Lodge offers a more intimate experience with just five thatched chalets, while Umlani Bushcamp strips away all pretence of luxury to deliver an authentic, back-to-basics bush camp experience — paraffin lanterns, open-air showers, and boma dinners under a canopy of stars. For those seeking the raw essence of the African bush without distraction, Umlani is hard to beat.
Additional options include Simbavati River Lodge, Shindzela Tented Camp, and Makanyi Private Game Lodge, each occupying their own traversing area and offering distinct perspectives on the Timbavati experience.
Getting There by Air
Timbavati is served by Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (FAKN), located approximately 30 to 45 minutes by road from most lodges in the reserve, depending on their position. A charter flight from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit takes approximately one hour — a fraction of the five to six hours required to drive the N4 and R40 route through Nelspruit and the Lowveld.
Some lodges in the Timbavati area also have access to Ngala airstrip or private bush strips that can accommodate lighter aircraft. These strips offer the advantage of landing directly within the reserve, eliminating road transfers entirely. Our fleet includes aircraft suited to both the paved Hoedspruit runway and shorter unpaved strips, allowing us to tailor the routing to your specific lodge.
Road transfers from Hoedspruit are typically arranged by your lodge and often incorporate game viewing along the way. Many guests spot their first wildlife before even reaching the lodge gates — a fitting introduction to one of Africa's great wild places.
Why Fly Private
The drive from Johannesburg to Timbavati is long and tiring. Five to six hours on the N4 through Emalahleni and Nelspruit, then the winding R40 through the Lowveld — by the time you arrive, half your day is gone. A private charter flight covers the same distance in roughly one hour, departing on your schedule from Lanseria or OR Tambo.
For international travellers arriving at OR Tambo International Airport, a charter connection means you can transition from intercontinental flight to bush camp in under two hours. No overnight stay in Johannesburg required, no domestic airline connection to manage — just a seamless door-to-door service that maximises your time in the wild.
Private charters also offer flexibility that scheduled services cannot match. If you are combining Timbavati with another destination — perhaps Sabi Sands or Thornybush — we can route your flight to include multiple stops, creating a flying safari that covers several reserves in a single trip.
Angel Gabriel Aeronautics offers private charter flights, fixed-rate charters on popular routes, and comprehensive safari packages that combine flights, accommodation, and transfers. Request a quote for your Timbavati trip and we will plan every detail.
