Mashatu Game Reserve — the Land of the Giants in Botswana

Overview

Mashatu Game Reserve — known as the "Land of the Giants" — is a 42,000-hectare private reserve in Botswana's Northern Tuli Game Reserve, situated at the confluence of two of Southern Africa's great rivers: the Limpopo and the Shashe. This is where three countries meet — Botswana, South Africa, and Zimbabwe — and the landscape here is unlike anything else in the subcontinent.

Mashatu is defined by its scale. Towering sandstone ridges sculpted over millions of years rise above vast open plains dotted with ancient mashatu trees (nyala berry trees, from which the reserve takes its name). The Limpopo River's wide, sandy bed carves through the eastern boundary, creating dramatic riverine corridors where elephants gather in herds of a hundred or more. This is the largest population of elephants on private land anywhere in Africa — a staggering statistic that gives the "Land of the Giants" its name.

But the giants are not just elephants. Everything here seems bigger: the towering baobabs that dot the sandstone ridges, the vast colonies of cape vultures nesting on the cliffs, the enormous eland that move across the plains. Even the sky feels bigger, with an immense, uncluttered horizon that offers some of the most dramatic African sunsets you will ever witness.

Wildlife & Activities

Mashatu's wildlife offering is extraordinary. The reserve is home to lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, jackal, and the Big 5 (though rhino numbers are kept confidential for security reasons). The elephant herds are the headline act — it is not uncommon to encounter breeding herds of 50 to 100 individuals moving across the floodplains or drinking at one of the many waterholes. Leopards are regularly sighted in the rocky kopjes and along the river courses, and Mashatu's lion prides are among the most photographed in Botswana.

Birding at Mashatu is world-class, with over 350 species recorded. The sandstone cliffs host breeding colonies of cape vultures, while the riverine forests attract kingfishers, bee-eaters, and a variety of raptors. During the summer months, migrant species swell the count further, making this a premier birding destination year-round.

One of Mashatu's most distinctive experiences is the on-foot rhino tracking. Led by specialist trackers, guests follow fresh spoor on foot through the bush, a thrilling and deeply immersive way to experience the African wilderness. The reserve also offers sleep-out camps — simple, open-air platforms where you spend the night under the stars with nothing between you and the bush. It is the most elemental safari experience imaginable.

Photographic hides positioned at waterholes and along elephant paths provide exceptional close-up photography opportunities. Professional and amateur photographers travel from around the world specifically for Mashatu's hides, which produce intimate, eye-level images of elephants, predators, and birdlife that are impossible to achieve from a vehicle.

Mountain biking, horse riding, and guided bush walks round out the activity list, offering different ways to experience a landscape that is ancient, vast, and endlessly compelling.

Lodges & Accommodation

Mashatu offers six distinct accommodation options, each catering to a different style of safari experience.

Euphorbia Mashatu is the reserve's five-star flagship property. Perched atop a ridge with panoramic views across the reserve, Euphorbia combines contemporary luxury with wild bushveld setting. Each suite features floor-to-ceiling glass, private plunge pools, and indoor-outdoor living spaces designed to blur the boundary between lodge and landscape. The dining is exceptional, with multi-course menus paired with South African wines served under the stars.

Mashatu Lodge is the original property and remains the heart of the reserve. With 14 suites arranged along a river course, the lodge offers classic safari luxury with a warm, established feel. The swimming pool, open-air boma, and extensive gardens make it a comfortable base for multi-night stays.

Mashatu Tent Camp delivers a more rustic, immersive bush experience. Eight spacious tents set along the Majale River provide comfortable accommodation with the sensory immediacy of canvas — the sounds of the bush at night, the rustle of elephants moving past, the calls of nightjars and owls.

Kolokolo is an exclusive-use camp ideal for families or small groups wanting complete privacy. With its own guide, vehicle, and staff, Kolokolo offers a bespoke safari experience tailored entirely to your group's preferences and pace.

Shalimpo and Majale offer additional options for different group sizes and budgets, ensuring that there is a Mashatu experience to suit every traveller.

Getting There by Air

By road, Mashatu is a six-hour drive from Johannesburg — and that is without accounting for the Pont Drift or Platjan border crossings into Botswana, which can add significant delays, paperwork, and unpredictability to the journey. The road route through Limpopo Province is long, and the final stretch to the reserve involves rough gravel roads. For most guests, the drive alone is enough to consume an entire day of their trip.

By charter flight, the journey takes approximately 1.5 hours. Angel Gabriel Aeronautics flies directly to Limpopo Valley Airfield, a well-maintained airstrip located inside the Northern Tuli Game Reserve. From the airstrip, it is a short game-drive transfer to your lodge — and the transfer itself is a safari experience, as the route passes through prime wildlife habitat.

The single biggest advantage of flying to Mashatu is bypassing the border crossing entirely. When you fly direct from Johannesburg, immigration and customs formalities are handled seamlessly as part of the charter process. There are no queues, no waiting for vehicle clearances, no uncertainty about border operating hours. You simply land, step off the aircraft, and begin your safari.

Our fleet includes a range of aircraft suitable for the Limpopo Valley Airfield, from single-engine turboprops for couples and small groups to larger twin-engine aircraft for bigger parties. We operate from both OR Tambo International and Lanseria airports in Johannesburg, and can arrange connecting flights from Cape Town, Durban, or any other departure point in Southern Africa.

Why Fly Private to Mashatu

Mashatu is one of those destinations where flying private does not just save time — it fundamentally changes the experience. The six-hour drive through Limpopo, combined with the unpredictable border crossing, means that guests who drive typically arrive exhausted and lose an entire afternoon of game viewing. Fly in, and you can be on an afternoon game drive by lunchtime on the day you depart Johannesburg.

The border crossing advantage cannot be overstated. The Pont Drift and Platjan border posts between South Africa and Botswana are small, remote crossings with limited operating hours and occasional delays. During peak season, waits of an hour or more are not unusual. Vehicle documentation requirements add another layer of complexity. Flying eliminates all of this entirely.

For photographers — and Mashatu attracts serious photographers from around the world — every hour in the reserve matters. The golden light of early morning and late afternoon is finite and precious. Flying maximises your time in the field, ensuring you are positioned at a hide or on a game drive during those critical hours rather than sitting in a vehicle on the N1.

Mashatu also combines beautifully with other destinations in a multi-stop flying safari. Fly from Mashatu to Madikwe Game Reserve or across to the Greater Kruger area for a contrasting safari experience. We regularly build itineraries that pair Mashatu's open landscapes and elephant herds with the dense bushveld and leopards of the lowveld — a combination that is impossible to achieve efficiently by road.
