Sabi Sands Game Reserve
The world's premier leopard destination. Fly direct from Johannesburg in one hour.

Overview
Sabi Sands Game Reserve is widely regarded as the finest private game reserve in Africa. Covering approximately 65,000 hectares of pristine lowveld bushveld in Mpumalanga province, it shares a 50-kilometre unfenced boundary with Kruger National Park, allowing wildlife to move freely between the two reserves. This open ecosystem means Sabi Sands benefits from the full complement of Kruger's wildlife populations while offering an exclusively private, low-density safari experience.
The reserve was established in 1948 when a group of private landowners agreed to drop their internal fences and manage their land collectively for conservation. Today, Sabi Sands comprises multiple individually owned properties — each operating its own lodge or lodges — united under the Sabi Sand Wildtuin management authority. The result is a mosaic of world-class safari lodges, each with exclusive traversing rights over vast tracts of wilderness.
What sets Sabi Sands apart from virtually every other safari destination in Southern Africa is the quality of its game viewing. The reserve's animals have been habituated to vehicles over decades. Leopards here are not just seen — they are observed at close range, on foot, hunting, feeding, and raising cubs, in a way that is simply not possible in public parks. For wildlife photographers and serious safari enthusiasts, Sabi Sands is the benchmark against which all other destinations are measured.
Wildlife & Activities
Sabi Sands is globally famous for one thing above all else: leopard sightings. The reserve consistently delivers the highest density and best-quality leopard encounters in the world. Individual leopards here are known by name and tracked by guides who have followed their lineages for generations. It is not uncommon to spend extended time with a leopard at distances of 5 to 10 metres, observing natural behaviour undisturbed.
But Sabi Sands is far more than leopards. All of the Big 5 are present in healthy numbers. Lion prides patrol the reserve's river systems, elephant herds move through the riverine woodlands along the Sabie and Sand rivers, and both black and white rhinoceros are protected by dedicated anti-poaching units. Buffalo herds of several hundred individuals are regularly encountered, particularly in the open areas near the Kruger boundary.
A crucial advantage of Sabi Sands over Kruger's public areas is that off-road driving is permitted. Guides can leave the road to follow animals into the bush, providing close-up encounters that are impossible when restricted to tarred or gravel roads. Night drives with spotlights are standard, revealing nocturnal species including African civet, large-spotted genet, aardvark, pangolin, and the reserve's resident porcupines and honey badgers.
Walking safaris are offered by most lodges, led by armed and experienced field guides. These walks focus on tracking, botany, and the smaller details of the ecosystem — the things you miss from a vehicle. Several lodges also offer specialist photographic safaris with dedicated photography vehicles featuring camera mounts, bean bags, and optimal positioning for the best light.
Lodges & Accommodation
The concentration of world-class safari lodges in Sabi Sands is unmatched anywhere in Africa. Each property occupies its own traversing area, ensuring that sightings are never crowded and that guests experience genuine exclusivity.
Londolozi Private Game Reserve is the birthplace of the modern luxury safari, pioneered by the Varty family since the 1920s. Its five camps — Varty, Tree, Founders, Pioneer, and Granite — range from family-friendly to ultra-exclusive, all united by Londolozi's legendary tracking team and its deep relationship with the Dudley leopard bloodline.
Singita Sabi Sand operates two lodges on its 45,000-acre concession: Ebony Lodge, with its classic colonial elegance, and Boulders Lodge, a contemporary masterpiece in glass and stone. Singita consistently ranks among the top safari brands in the world, and its Sabi Sands properties are widely considered the jewels in the crown.
MalaMala Game Reserve holds the largest land holding in Sabi Sands at 13,300 hectares and shares the longest boundary with Kruger National Park of any private reserve. Its three camps — MalaMala Main Camp, Rattray's, and Sable Camp — offer arguably the most consistent Big 5 game viewing in Africa, with an unbroken record of daily sightings stretching back decades.
Sabi Sabi operates four distinctive lodges: Earth Lodge (built almost entirely underground), Bush Lodge, Little Bush Camp, and Selati Camp. Each offers a different aesthetic and experience, from contemporary luxury to romantic Out of Africa elegance.
Ulusaba, Sir Richard Branson's private game reserve, consists of Rock Lodge perched on a koppie with panoramic views and Safari Lodge nestled in the riverine bush. Both properties reflect Branson's flair for combining adventure with luxury, and the entire reserve can be booked exclusively for private groups.
Nightly rates across Sabi Sands lodges typically range from R12,000 to R50,000 per person per night, fully inclusive of all meals, beverages, game drives, and bush walks. Peak season runs from June to October during the dry winter months when vegetation is sparse and wildlife concentrates around water sources.
Getting There by Air
Sabi Sands Game Reserve is accessible via several airstrips, both within the reserve and in the surrounding area:
- Private reserve airstrips — Several Sabi Sands lodges maintain their own airstrips, allowing direct door-to-door air access. Londolozi, MalaMala, Singita, and Ulusaba all have private strips capable of handling light charter aircraft. Landing directly at your lodge eliminates all road transfers.
- Skukuza Airport (FASZ) — Located inside Kruger National Park, Skukuza is a convenient gateway to the eastern sections of Sabi Sands. Road transfers from Skukuza to most Sabi Sands lodges take 30 to 60 minutes, often doubling as a game drive through the park.
- Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA / FAKN) — The region's main airport near Nelspruit, approximately 90 minutes by road from most Sabi Sands lodges. Best suited for guests combining their visit with time in the Panorama Route area.
Flight time from Johannesburg (OR Tambo, Lanseria, or Grand Central) to the Sabi Sands area is approximately 1 hour in our charter aircraft. This compares to a drive of 5 to 6 hours from Johannesburg via the N4 and R536, often longer during holiday periods. Many of our clients connect directly from OR Tambo on arrival from international flights, eliminating the need for an overnight stay in Johannesburg.
Angel Gabriel Aeronautics coordinates directly with lodge managers to arrange your arrival. We confirm airstrip conditions, arrange ground transfers where needed, and ensure your luggage is handled from aircraft to safari vehicle. Request a personalised quote for your Sabi Sands charter.
Why Fly Private to Sabi Sands
The drive from Johannesburg to Sabi Sands is 5 to 6 hours under good conditions. The route takes you through Nelspruit and then north along the R536, a narrow two-lane road that winds through small towns and agricultural areas. In the final stretch, gravel roads within the reserve can be slow and bumpy, particularly in the wet summer months. After an international flight, the last thing you want is a half-day drive before your safari begins.
A private charter flight transforms the journey. In under an hour, you are on the ground at your lodge's private airstrip, greeted by your ranger with a cold drink and a short drive to your suite. Many of our guests land at Sabi Sands in time for their first afternoon game drive — gaining an entire additional safari session that road travellers miss.
Flying private is particularly advantageous for multi-destination itineraries. Combine Sabi Sands with Kruger National Park, add a few nights at a Timbavati or Thornybush lodge, or connect onwards to Madikwe Game Reserve or Cape Town — all linked by short, comfortable flights rather than exhausting road transfers.
For honeymoon couples, families with children, and business groups, the privacy and flexibility of a charter flight sets the tone for the entire trip. No shared shuttle buses, no fixed schedules, no delays. You fly when you want, with only your party on board.
