Waterberg Biosphere Reserve
UNESCO-listed wilderness in Limpopo Province — 45 minutes by charter flight from Johannesburg

Overview
The Waterberg Biosphere Reserve is one of Southern Africa's most extraordinary wilderness areas and the first region in Limpopo Province to receive UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status. Spanning over 654,000 hectares in the northernmost province of South Africa, the Waterberg is a landscape of towering sandstone mountains, deep river valleys, rolling savannahs, and bushveld plains that together create one of the most ecologically diverse regions on the continent.
What makes the Waterberg exceptional is its geological heritage. The mountains here contain some of the oldest exposed rock formations on earth, dating back nearly two billion years. These ancient sandstone and quartzite formations have been shaped by millennia of wind and water into dramatic cliffs, gorges, and plateaux that give the region its distinctive character. The name "Waterberg" — meaning "water mountain" in Afrikaans — speaks to the abundance of natural springs, streams, and rivers that flow through these ancient formations, sustaining a remarkable diversity of plant and animal life.
Unlike the busier reserves in the Greater Kruger area, the Waterberg offers a more intimate, unhurried safari experience. The region is malaria-free in many areas, making it an excellent choice for families with young children. And at just 45 minutes by charter flight from Johannesburg — compared to a gruelling three to four-hour drive — the Waterberg is one of the most accessible Big 5 destinations in the country.
Wildlife & Activities
The Waterberg supports a full complement of Big 5 game: lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo all roam these mountains and valleys. The region is particularly noted for its thriving populations of both black and white rhino, and several reserves within the biosphere have been instrumental in rhino conservation efforts. Leopards thrive in the rocky terrain, and the diverse habitats support large populations of giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, sable antelope, and over 300 bird species.
What sets the Waterberg apart from the flatter lowveld reserves is the sheer variety of activities on offer. The mountainous terrain makes for exceptional hiking — from gentle morning walks along river valleys to more challenging summit trails that reward you with panoramic views stretching to the horizon. Several lodges offer guided bush walks led by armed rangers, providing an intimate, ground-level perspective on the bush that you simply cannot get from a vehicle.
Horse riding safaris are a particular highlight of the Waterberg. Properties like Ant's Nest and Ant's Hill have built an international reputation for horseback safaris, where experienced riders can canter alongside giraffe and zebra across open plains. The region's perennial rivers and streams also offer excellent fly-fishing for yellowfish and bass, a rare combination with Big 5 game viewing in one destination.
Game drives in the Waterberg unfold across dramatically different landscapes compared to the lowveld. You might begin a morning drive threading through dense bushveld, emerge onto an open plateau with sweeping mountain views, and end up descending into a lush river valley where elephants come to drink. The terrain itself is part of the spectacle, and the relative quietness of the reserves means sightings often feel personal and exclusive.
Lodges & Accommodation
The Waterberg hosts a diverse range of accommodation options, from ultra-luxurious lodges to more intimate, family-run bush camps. Each property offers a distinctly different experience, and the region's size means that lodges are spread across different ecosystems within the biosphere.
Marataba Safari Lodge is the flagship luxury property in the region, set within the 23,000-hectare Marakele contractual park at the southern edge of the Waterberg. Marataba's tented suites combine contemporary design with raw bushveld setting, perched on the banks of a seasonal river with views across the Waterberg mountains. The lodge offers Big 5 game viewing, walking safaris, and mountain biking, all within a malaria-free zone.
Ant's Nest and Ant's Hill are renowned worldwide for their horseback safaris. These owner-run properties on a private 12,000-hectare reserve offer an informal, family-friendly atmosphere with superb riding across open plains and through river crossings. Non-riders are equally well catered for with game drives, bush walks, and swimming. The warmth of the hosts and the relaxed pace of the experience make these properties perennial favourites.
Jembisa is an exclusive-use bush house set within a private concession, offering complete privacy for families or small groups. With its own dedicated staff, game vehicle, and guide, Jembisa delivers a bespoke safari experience tailored entirely to your group's preferences.
Shambala Private Game Reserve spans 10,000 hectares and is home to the Big 5. The reserve offers luxurious lodge accommodation and the Zulu Camp for a more authentic bush experience, with game drives, bush walks, and exceptional birding.
Getting There by Air
By road, the Waterberg is a three to four-hour drive from Johannesburg — a journey that involves navigating through Pretoria, up the N1, and then along increasingly rural roads into Limpopo Province. It is manageable but tedious, particularly after a long international flight. By charter flight, the journey takes approximately 45 minutes.
Angel Gabriel Aeronautics operates charter flights from Johannesburg (OR Tambo and Lanseria) to various airstrips throughout the Waterberg region. The main commercial airfield serving the area is Ellisras/Lephalale, which can accommodate a range of aircraft types. Many of the larger private reserves and lodges maintain their own private airstrips, allowing us to land you within minutes of your lodge.
Our fleet includes aircraft perfectly suited to the Waterberg's airstrip infrastructure. Turboprop aircraft like the Pilatus PC-12 and King Air can comfortably make the short hop from Johannesburg, while smaller aircraft can access the more remote private strips. We handle all logistics from door to door — simply tell us which lodge you are visiting and we will arrange the most efficient routing.
For guests connecting from international flights at OR Tambo, a charter to the Waterberg means you can be on a game drive within two hours of clearing customs. Compare that to five or six hours of driving after an overnight flight and the value of flying becomes obvious.
Why Fly Private to the Waterberg
The Waterberg is close enough to Johannesburg that driving is possible — but "possible" and "enjoyable" are different things. The N1 highway through Pretoria is notoriously congested, and by the time you clear the urban sprawl and turn off onto the regional roads, you have lost the better part of a morning. A 45-minute charter flight transforms the Waterberg from a half-day journey into a quick hop, giving you more time in the bush rather than on the road.
Flying private also opens up the possibility of multi-destination itineraries. Combine two or three nights in the Waterberg with time in the Marakele National Park — which lies within the Waterberg Biosphere — before flying on to another destination. We can build a seamless flying safari that covers several distinct ecosystems without the fatigue of long road transfers.
For families, the combination of malaria-free game viewing, diverse activities beyond traditional game drives, and a short flight time makes the Waterberg an ideal first safari destination. Children can ride horses, swim in rock pools, hike through ancient mountains, and still see the Big 5 — all within easy reach of Johannesburg.
Whether you are planning a romantic weekend at Marataba, a horseback safari at Ant's Nest, or a multi-generational family reunion at Jembisa, Angel Gabriel Aeronautics will get you there comfortably, efficiently, and in style.
