Private charter flight over Southern Africa

The Freedom of Private Aviation

A private charter flight is the most flexible way to travel across Southern Africa. There are no fixed schedules to work around, no connecting flights, and no queues. You choose when you depart, where you land, and which aircraft suits your group. Angel Gabriel Aeronautics arranges every detail — from flight planning and permissions to ground coordination at your destination.

As a charter broker based in Johannesburg, we connect you with over 30 vetted operators and aircraft across the region. This gives you access to a wider selection of aircraft types, availability windows, and pricing options than any single operator can offer. Every operator in our network holds a valid Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and meets our safety and maintenance standards.

How It Works

The process is straightforward. Tell us your dates, passenger count, departure point, and destination. We source the best-matched aircraft from our operator network, present you with options and transparent pricing, and handle everything from there. On departure day, you arrive at the airport, board your aircraft, and fly direct to your destination with no detours and no delays.

Departures are available from any licensed airport or airstrip in Southern Africa. Most of our clients depart from Lanseria International Airport (FALA) or OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, but we regularly arrange flights from Grand Central, Wonderboom, Cape Town International, and dozens of bush airstrips across the region.

At OR Tambo and Cape Town International Airport, we use the services of Menzies Aviation, the airport-appointed ground handlers. A Menzies VIP escort will meet you directly off your inbound flight at the gantry, assist with baggage collection and immigration if required, and walk you through to your waiting charter aircraft. You have a dedicated escort with you the entire time — and this service is included in the charter cost.

Aircraft Options

Our network includes aircraft suited to every mission profile. For short bush hops to airstrips like Skukuza or Madikwe, a Cessna Caravan or Pilatus PC-12 offers the perfect combination of range and rough-strip capability. For longer routes or larger groups, pressurised twin-engine turboprops like the King Air 200 or King Air 350 provide cabin comfort at higher altitudes and faster cruise speeds.

Light jets are available for routes where speed is the priority — Johannesburg to Cape Town in under two hours, for instance. For groups of up to 19 passengers, we source Jetstream 41 and similar regional aircraft. Browse our fleet page for a full overview of available aircraft types.

Popular Routes

While a private charter can take you anywhere with a runway, certain routes are consistently in high demand:

  • Johannesburg to Kruger National Park — Under an hour to Skukuza, KMIA, or Hoedspruit. The most popular safari charter route in South Africa.
  • Johannesburg to Cape Town — Bypass the commercial airline experience with a direct private flight in under two hours.
  • Johannesburg to Madikwe Game Reserve — A 45-minute flight replacing a 4-hour drive on the N4 towards Botswana.
  • Johannesburg to Sabi Sands — Direct to the world's premier leopard-viewing destination via Ulusaba or Londolozi airstrips.
  • Johannesburg to Mashatu — Cross-border into Botswana's Tuli Block for elephant herds and dramatic landscapes.
  • Inter-lodge transfers — Connect multiple safari properties in a single itinerary without backtracking to Johannesburg.

Why Charter Instead of Fly Commercial

Commercial aviation serves a limited number of airports on fixed schedules. If your destination is a private game reserve, a remote lodge, or any location not served by scheduled carriers, a charter is the only practical option by air. But even on routes where commercial flights exist, a charter offers significant advantages.

There are no check-in queues, no security lines, and no boarding gates. You arrive at the airport and are escorted to your aircraft by the crew or a Menzies VIP escort. Your luggage stays with you and is loaded directly onto the aircraft — no carousels, no waiting. Baggage allowances vary by aircraft type, and on smaller aircraft they can be more restrictive than commercial flights, so we advise on limits when quoting to make sure there are no surprises.

Scheduling is flexible and built around your needs. Early morning departures to catch the best game viewing light, late afternoon returns to maximise your time on safari, or mid-day flights to fit around business meetings. Note that unmanned airfields require daylight operations by law, and some border posts close as early as 4pm, so we plan your itinerary accordingly. For groups of four or more, the per-person cost of a charter is often comparable to business class commercial fares, with a vastly superior experience.

Baggage: Why We Require Soft Bags

Unlike commercial jets with large cargo holds, most charter aircraft store luggage in a limited space within the cabin or in a compact rear cargo area. The PC-12, for example, has a conical-shaped cargo compartment that simply cannot accommodate rigid suitcases. Soft-sided bags are essential for three reasons:

  • Ergonomics — Soft bags can be shaped and compressed to fit into the irregular cargo spaces found on smaller aircraft. Hard-shell cases often cannot physically fit, regardless of their size.
  • Safety — Hard bags that cannot be secured in the cargo area may need to be stowed in the cabin. In turbulence, an unsecured hard case becomes a dangerous projectile. Soft bags can be safely secured and absorb impact.
  • Civil Aviation Law — Unsecured luggage in the cabin is a breach of aviation regulations. Civil Aviation inspectors can conduct ramp inspections at any time, and non-compliance carries heavy fines or suspension of the operator's licence. The pilot in command has the final say and may refuse to load any luggage that cannot be safely stowed.

We will confirm the specific baggage allowance and requirements for your aircraft when we quote. As a general rule, pack in soft duffel-style bags and avoid hard-shell suitcases. If you are heading to a bush destination, this is doubly important — most safari lodges recommend the same.

The Angel Gabriel Advantage

We have been arranging private charter flights across Southern Africa since 2013, and that experience counts. As a broker, we are not tied to a single fleet. When you contact an operator directly, you see only their aircraft and their availability. When you contact Angel Gabriel, we canvass the entire market. If one operator's King Air is booked, we find another. If a Caravan is better suited than the Pilatus you initially considered, we advise accordingly. Our role is to match you with the right aircraft at the right price, every time.

We also handle the operational complexity that comes with charter flying in Southern Africa. Border-crossing flights into Botswana, Mozambique, and Namibia require customs clearance, overflight permits, and coordination with immigration authorities. Flights to remote bush strips require knowledge of strip conditions, weight restrictions, and seasonal accessibility. Our team manages all of this so you simply arrive, board, and fly.
